With OLED TVs entering the market, we’re sure you’re all wondering what the fuss is all about and whether or not it’s a worthwhile investment. To aid your decision-making process, we’ve put together a brief comparison between the humble LED and the new kid on the block: OLED.

Prior to the launch of OLED, LED televisions monopolised the market. Until recently, deciding to purchase a new TV was the easy part. The hard part was choosing which type of LED television was right for you.

Now with two types of TVs to choose from, the decision has become more complex. Firstly, let’s define these acronyms. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode while LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Each pixel on an OLED TV uses its own illumination, whereas each pixel on an LED TV is illuminated from behind.

OLED TV’s are currently only produced by LG, which is why they are still quite expensive. LG has managed to develop a TV which has unchallenged picture quality.

OLED allows individual pixels to be turned off. This can’t be done on an LED TV, which is why there is always a blue tinge. However, the LED can’t be challenged when it comes to the brightness of a full screen.

It seems that the OLED also comes out on top when it comes to contrast. This is due to the OLED TV being able to create an absolute black, thus allowing a greater contrast between the brightness and darkness on the TV screen. This in turn enhances the picture quality.

The LED TV on the other hand, outshines the OLED in energy consumption. This is because the OLED energy consumption is directly linked to the brightness of the screen. Therefore, if you are watching a rather bright movie, it will inevitably increase your power usage. In comparison, the LED backlight is consistent, and can be reduced by adjusting the light settings.

The LED and OLED life span is on par with one another. Given that the LED is a significantly cheaper alternative to the OLED, it will certainly be a consideration factor when weighing up these TV’s.
